Pelchem SOC Ltd is a State Owned Company, fully commercialized in 2007 and a subsidiary of Necsa SOC Ltd (The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation) with its purpose to maintain fluorochemical technologies, grow the portfolio of fluorochemical products and to align with and support the South African Fluorochemical Expansion Initiative (FEI).
Pelchem is the only fluorochemical manufacturer in the southern hemisphere with production facilities located on the Pelindaba site of Necsa in the Hartbeespoort area, 30 km west of Pretoria and 50 km north-west of Johannesburg.
Pelchem’s technical advice is based on our experience since 1984 in hydrogen fluoride and fluorine as well as the European and USA technical guidelines on safety, transport and storage, as published by the HFIPI, CGA and CTEF.
Although South Africa supplies 10% of the fluoride source to the global fluorochemical industry, only 5 % of local production is beneficiated. The Fluorochemical Expansion Initiative (FEI) program attempts to redress this through the establishment of cutting edge technology in fluorochemicals, accelerate skills development in fluorine chemistry and engineering while producing value-adding world-class fluorochemical industries in South Africa. The Department of Science and Technology has tasked Pelchem to manage the research and development program for FEI. Collaboration with international companies and institutes is welcomed.
In addition to the FEI R&D programme, a Multipurpose Fluorination Pilot Plant (MFPP) comprising of five facilities has been established and forms the core of a centre of competence for fluorochemical development in South Africa. The pilot plants produce semi-commercial quantities of new products for market penetration, demonstration of new technology developed in the laboratories and developing data for commercial scale-up.
